The FIDE September 2026 rating list was shaped by the Grand Chess Tour Sinquefield Cup, GCT Finals and the Cairns Cup.
Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu climbed to world No. 8 after winning the 2026 Grand Chess Tour and is India No. 1 ahead of Arjun Erigaisi. Wesley So returned to the open top 5 after nearly four years.
On the women's list Tan Zhongyi re-entered the top 5 after the Cairns Cup. WCM Deekshitha Modipalli of India posted a 297-point gain to 2454 — the largest monthly jump on the published top-100 notes.
India has 15 players in the open top 100 and 11 in the women's top 100.
